The name of the company was at first Wykeham Trees, set up by the late Lord Downe
in 1975 with the intention of being the north of England’s leading large tree grower,
supplying mainly local government.
By the mid eighties sales expanded rapidly, including the supply of trees to other
nurseries across the UK, landscape contractors and some local individuals. Over
time sales moved more to the commercial sector as out-of-town shopping and business
parks developed on a large national scale. At this time we began to offer container
grown trees to allow all year planting to be done.
The nineties saw the increase in larger trees (semi mature) and more diversification
in stock – Pines and the trialing of our instant shrubs and hedging.
2000/2001 saw severe weather problems across the UK, and the decision was made to
become a mainly containerised supplier.
In April 2003, Wykeham Mature Plants was launched as a direct sales nursery supplying
all market sectors with a complete range of mature trees, shrubs and conifers.
New Container Units
Clearance and levelling of land previously used for growing field-grown trees to
allow two more container units to be built.
