The Walled Garden

Our Site

Set in the Vale of Pickering, the nursery is located on the Dawnay Estate at Wykeham with over 100 acres of field grown tree and shrub stocks and the container units are within the Estate walled gardens adjacent to the main house.

The offices of Wykeham Mature Plants operate from the converted Bothy within the walled garden of Wykeham Abbey. The Oxford English Dictionary definition of Bothy is: A rude shelter or hut in the woods; or, a simple shelter, left unlocked and available for anyone to use without charge. This Bothy is where the unmarried gardeners working within The Estate gardens would sleep; it had fallen into disrepair until Lord Downe had it completely renovated in 2006 for the purpose of giving Wykeham Mature Plants office and sales staff a permanent base within the main sales area of the business.

This beautifully converted character building, dating back in part as far as the 18th century and backed by the newly restored Victorian vinehouse, is perfectly placed within the container unit areas of the nursery to allow staff to be on-hand at any time during opening hours for providing one-to-one service and advice to our customers. In fact, should the weather be inclement or you simply fancy a sit down, feel free to come inside and browse through some of our literature while we put the kettle on!

The Walled Garden itself, surrounded by Grade II listed walls dating back to the 18th century, provides a beautiful setting for our main sales area. Although largely filled with our quality container-grown specimen stock, its history can be seen from the espalier and fan trained fruit that can be found growing around the walls. The beauty of this setting can be experienced throughout the year, further enhanced by our seasonal stock displays and, with over five acres open to the public for browsing, provides an attractive and peaceful location for serious plant shopping, looking for ideas, or simply having a wander.

Dogs are welcome (on leads), as are children (under parental supervision). However, please remember that we are a commercial production nursery and as such we do not have specific play facilities.
