Forestry or timber production at Wykeham currently extends to 750 acres (304 Hectares) of woodland. Approximately half of this area is in coniferous commercial forestry, the other half being in mixed broad-leaved woodlands.
The broad-leaved woodlands are nearly all situated on the ‘lower ground’ forming part of the Vale of Pickering. There is continual management intervention of these low woodlands, where the mature trees are felled and replanted, using the continuous cover system.
A small stand of cricket bat willow has been established on the wetter ground.High quality Coniferous trees are grown on the outside edge of the North York Moors. Varieties include Douglas Fir, Spruce, Larch and more recently Corsican Pine.
The Estate is proud of its Environmental record and constantly strives to become ever more proactive in being at the forefront of good environmental practice.
The Estate manages around 5660 Ha (14,000 acres) of SSSI Land (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) across the North York Moors (The Danby Moors Estate) and at Ruston and Wykeham
In addition the Estate is responsible for a number of Ancient Woodland Sites (AWS) and Planted Ancient Woodland Sites (PAWS) which are managed sensitively with a view to both preservation of the woodland cover and species diversity as well as retention of a wide age range within the woods to provide a diverse habitat. The Estate does, however, respond to the commercial demands for timber production and grows some fine conifer stands including Douglas Fir, fine examples of which were donated to the Yorkshire Show Ground in 2005 for the pole climbing competition.
Timber is available for sale and interested buyers should contact Matthew Noble.
