Fishing – River Derwent

Fishing on Dawnay Estates

The Dawnay Estates offers a wide variety of fishing either directly on Wykeham Lakes (still water – trout & coarse fishing) or through clubs on Estate rivers such as the Upper Derwent or the River Esk.

The Upper River Derwent is a delightful trout stream which is stocked with Brown Trout. The major part of the river flows through stunning scenery of the Hackness and Forge Valleys. The fishing is controlled by the Derwent Anglers club. There are several excellent pubs such as the Everley (Tel. No: 01723 882202 for overnight accommodation and food, and the club has the use of an excellent clubroom in a converted barn at Langdale End.

The River Esk near Whitby is Yorkshire’s principle salmon and sea trout river. The Dawnay Estates own several miles of the upper reaches of the river and the fishing is controlled by the Danby Angling club. Day tickets can be purchased at Danby Village Post Office (Tel. No: 01287 660220). Salmon and sea trout fishing is either by fly or spinner and the prominent months are September and October. The Danby Angling Club also stock the river with Trout.

The Esk Valley lies east / west and is surrounded by heather moorland or steep sided grass dales. There are several excellent pubs such as the Fox and Hounds at Ainthorpe near Danby (Tel. No: 01287 660218) and the Wheatsheaf at Egton (Tel. No: 01947 895271).
