Trees – Specimens
Wykeham Mature Plants produce an excellent range of larger trees for immediate effect
with trees up to six metres tall available from stock.
Container Trees
These days due to advancements in growing techniques most of our trees are available
container grown which has a number of advantages:-
- They are available all year round.
- They are much easier to transplant than traditional field grown stock.
- Most importantly they are much easier to handle than traditional root balled trees.
Rootball Trees
Many of our larger trees have been field-grown and are therefore supplied rootballed
(dug out of the ground by machine lifting equipment with the roots still surrounded
by soil, then wrapped in hessian material and held together by a wrapping of non-galvanized
wire mesh). These are only available during the dormant period, which is usually
November to March.
The really big root balled trees are very heavy (about one tonne each), and have
to be mechanically handled at all times so we recommend using our planting service.
However, if you wish to plant rootballed plants yourself please be aware of the
weight and take necessary precautions for lifting, such as using mechanical lifting
aides. Also, when planting do not unwrap the rootball as this may lead to root damage
– the hessian and non-galvanized wire will gradually rot away when underground.
