Help: Search the Catalogue to find what you want

• Filter by Plant Categories...
  To choose the Plant Categories, click one of the Category 'radio buttons'

  To search for a particular Genus, use the Plants List. Scroll down the page to find the Genus you are interested in, then click on the link.

  Highlighted in yellow, in the middle block on the left of your page.

• Filter by Genus Initial...
  Use the alphabetical strip to filter plants by the first letter of their genus name. Very useful if, for example, you are looking for Acers and Abelias.

• Filter by Name or Description...
  Enter any text in the 'Quick Search' box to search names and descriptions . You can use '%' as 'wildcards'. For example, if you enter %crab appl% you will get any plant that has 'crab apple' either in its name or its description. Be as specific as possible: if, for example, you enter p%, you will get any name or description that starts with the letter 'p'.

Tree Sizes - Root Condition - Soils / Environments

  Most of our trees are measured by girth (circumference) in centimetres at one metre above ground level, eg. 12/14 and 14/16 which conforms to European standards. Fortunately as a rule of thumb the girth size roughly equates to the height in feet. Where the size is indicated as follows: 150/175 this represents the height of the plant material in centimetres, ie, the plant is 150 cm to 175 cm above ground level.

  

  Further abbreviations used are:

  • FTD = Feathered. The plant has branches from of near to ground level all the way up the stem.
  • MLT = Multi stemmed. This is a tree that has two of more trunks from ground level.
  • Std = Standard. This tree has a clear unbranched trunk up to a height of approximetly 175 cm.
  • Bsh = Bush. Bushy in shape.

  
• Root Condition Explained...

  The abbreviations used for Root Condition have the following meaning:

  • CG = Container Grown - Can usually be handled by two strong people.
  • CRB = Containerised Root Ball - This is where the plant has been lifted from the ground in its growing soil and potted. These plants are very heavy and usually need some form of mechanical handling.
  • RB = Root Balled - This is a plant supplied during the dormant winter period as a specimen dug up in its growing soil, whichis then encased in hessian and wire to enable transportation. THese plants are very heavy and usually need some form of mechanical handling.
  • BR = Bare Root - This is a plant supplied during the dormant winter period as a specimen dug up without soil and supplied with the roots bagged to prevent drying out. Although light and easy to lift they require careful aftercare to ensure success.

  
• Soils and Environments Explained...

  In the description for each plant, the headings of “soils” and “environments” relate to specific, so-called ‘problem’ conditions that this plant will tolerate (chalk, heavy or acid soils; wet, windy or seaside environments).

  Unless otherwise stated, average soils – i.e. relatively neutral, moist but freely-draining – and environments can be assumed to be ok.
