Production Manager


Wykeham Mature Plants is a 150 acre nursery based in Wykeham nr Scarborough North Yorkshire producing large container trees, specimen shrubs in 36 litre pots and approximately 5 kilometres per annum of field grown instant mature hedging.

Reporting to the General Manager on a regular basis this position is responsible for the management of approximately 15 staff ensuring the efficient production of plants and overseeing and ensuring that all loading of lorries and collections is carried out in an efficient and timely manner.

Detailed responsibilities


  • Ensuring that all labour and material resources are used to produce trees and shrubs effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensuring adequate and timely stocks of all production materials are available so that all work can be completed on time, efficiently without delay.
  • Systematic planning at regular intervals to determine what cultural work needs to be carried out and prioritising work to ensure it is carried out in a timely manner to a good standard.
  • Regular and systematic inspection of all crops for pests, diseases and weeds and ensure that all problems are dealt in systematic and timely manner.
  • Ensuring that all machinery is properly maintained, used effectively and correctly by the appropriately trained staff.
  • Ensuring all weedkillers and pesticides are ordered in a timely manner, correctly stored, and logged.
  • Overseeing staff training requirements
  • Ensure all staff are correctly trained and briefed before starting a job.

Customer service

  • Ensuring all picking and lifting is planned and organised in an efficient manner.
  • Overseeing the checking in off all bought in stock to ensure it complies with purchase orders and is of an adequate quality and is checked in properly.
  • Overseeing the loading of lorries to ensure they are correctly and safely loaded with correct paperwork handed to driver.
  • Overseeing the loading yard to ensure proper organisation and a tidy and safe working environment.
  • Ensuring adequate stocks of despatch materials are available.
  • Ensuring adequate stocks of stakes ties and sundries are available.
  • Overseeing the production of pick lists and delivery notes in a planned organised manner to ensure planned organised work.
