Griselinia littoralis is an evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, with light green, oval leaves. It makes an excellent evergreen hedging plant, especially as a seaside hedge as it will tolerate coastal salt winds. It’s hardy in the UK apart from in the far north and in frost pockets. It will tolerate most soils.

Osmanthus burkwoodii

Osmanthus Burkwoodii is a fantastic choice if you would like an evergreen flowering hedging or topiary option. This compact evergreen shrub produces white, fragrant flowers in spring and ovate, slightly toothed, glossy dark green leaves throughout the year. Relatively slow-growing.

When trimmed, Osmanthus Burkwoodii makes a great medium-sized evergreen hedge. It thrives in most well-drained soils, in both exposed or sheltered locations.

Leylandii

Popular for its evergreen sprays of fragrant green foliage, Leylandii is probably the fastest growing hedging plant. It can grow up to 1 metre (3 feet) a year. Kept trimmed, Leylandii conifers create a wonderfully dense screen of a hedge. They can reduce noise pollution and act as an effective windbreak.

Leylandii is a hybrid, accidentally created in Wales in the 19th century. It comes from two species of cypress from different parts of North America: the Monterey and the Nootka. Leylandii are ideal for normal soil conditions, sun or partial shade, exposed inland and coastal sites.

Holly

When selecting the best holly plants for hedges, it’s important to consider plant width. We sell a relatively slim plant which is an excellent choice for a spiky evergreen hedge. A hardier selection of common Holly, its glossy, leathery dark-green leaves are perfect for boundaries.

This holly variety produces small, white flowers in May and June. Red berries will appear in the winter if pollinated by a nearby donor holly tree.

Tolerant of air pollution, holly grows to a maximum height of 8 metres. It is suitable for most soils, either in full sun or part shade.

Elaeagnus

Dense, evergreen shrub with glossy, leathery leaves. Silvery young leaves, become glossy green with downy undersides. Height and spread up to 3m. Will grow in shade, but thrives in full sun.

A good evergreen that makes a good hedge in coastal areas. Bears small brownish, almost insignificant, strongly scented flowers in late summer or early autumn.

Yew

With a dense evergreen crown, yew hedge plants create excellent boundaries. They produce dark green-black needle-like foliage, red-brown bark and red berry-like fruit with toxic seeds. Yew is easy to clip and train for formal hedges and topiary schemes.

Yew hedge plants can grow up to a foot (30cm) a year. Need tall yew plants instantly? Ours range from 1m 25cm (4 feet) to above 2m 25 (over 7 feet tall). They tolerate urban sites, wind, root competition and even dense shade. They are not suitable for very acid soils, very sunny dry sites, or soggy or waterlogged soils.
