Hornbeam – Rootballed

Closely related to beech trees, Hornbeam is a bit more adaptable to soil situations. If kept trimmed Hornbeam makes an excellent hedge which, although it drops more leaf than Beech, is more than made up for in in its extra twiggyness and by the fact that it is a much quicker grower and much more tolerant of a wider range of soils including heavy damp ones. Soft, mid-green leaves turn golden yellow in autumn, then brown for winter (a percentage of leaves are retained in winter giving an “everbrown” characteristic which is useful for screening and privacy), and then leafing-up over a month earlier in spring than Beech with bright, vivid green soft leaves in spring.

This is offered as an almost instant hedge 200cm tall which will fill out to its finished form within one year. For immediate density we recommend planting them at a spacing of 55-65cm (stem to stem), but if time allows you can increase this distance somewhat to reduce the overall spend per metre. Hornbeam is an excellent hedging choice where privacy is required but the conditions are too damp for evergreens to thrive.

Available as a trimmed hedging block 200cm+ tall as a wire-wrapped rootball from our fields during dormancy (winter).

Griselinia littoralis

Griselinia littoralis is an evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, with light green, oval leaves. It makes an excellent evergreen hedging plant, especially as a seaside hedge as it will tolerate coastal salt winds. It’s hardy in the UK apart from in the far north and in frost pockets. It will tolerate most soils.

Portuguese laurel

Portuguese Laurel is a dense, bushy evergreen shrub. Our UK grown plants have red-stalked dark green leaves ranging from ovate to elliptic in shape. Capable of growing up to 20m in height, Portuguese Laurel is an excellent choice for hedging and screening. In June it displays white flowers, followed by red, maturing to dark purple berries. These are harmful if eaten.

Hardier than Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel can thrive even in shallow chalk soils.

Privet – Advanced

Classic hedging plant, semi-evergreen to evergreen (depending on how cold a winter we have and how exposed the site is). Traditional and popular, but plant with caution if you or your children are asthmatic as Privet can on occasion aggravate the condition.

Osmanthus burkwoodii

Osmanthus Burkwoodii is a fantastic choice if you would like an evergreen flowering hedging or topiary option. This compact evergreen shrub produces white, fragrant flowers in spring and ovate, slightly toothed, glossy dark green leaves throughout the year. Relatively slow-growing.

When trimmed, Osmanthus Burkwoodii makes a great medium-sized evergreen hedge. It thrives in most well-drained soils, in both exposed or sheltered locations.

Leylandii

Popular for its evergreen sprays of fragrant green foliage, Leylandii is probably the fastest growing hedging plant. It can grow up to 1 metre (3 feet) a year. Kept trimmed, Leylandii conifers create a wonderfully dense screen of a hedge. They can reduce noise pollution and act as an effective windbreak.

Leylandii is a hybrid, accidentally created in Wales in the 19th century. It comes from two species of cypress from different parts of North America: the Monterey and the Nootka. Leylandii are ideal for normal soil conditions, sun or partial shade, exposed inland and coastal sites.

Ilex Golden King

Looking for a stunning variegated evergreen? Ilex Golden King is a large but compact shrub. Deep green leaves are edged bright golden-yellow. Young spine-toothed leaves become spineless as they grow. In May and June, small white flowers appear. As it is a female holly variety, the Ilex Golden King produces reddish-brown berries in winter if a male pollinating plant is nearby.

Ilex Golden King can grow in full sun or part shade. But it will produce better leaf colour in full sun. Tolerant of air pollution, it thrives in moist but well-drained soil. When grown together, multiple plants can create an impressive hedge.

Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginata

Ilex aquifolium Argenteomarginata evergreen large shrub, large leathery, spiny, glossy cream-edged green leaves with wide white margins. Small white female flowers in May-June, followed by bright red berries in winter. Tolerant of air pollution.

As Spring is now here and the plants are waking up, in line with good horticultural practice we have stopped lifting root balled plants out of our fields now until the beginning of November. You are welcome to reserve stock now but we will not be able to supply until November.
