Pear

The most well-known pear in the UK. Type: Dessert. Eating time: October – November. Pollination group: C. Fruit size: Medium. Partially self-fertile. Heavy cropping. Grow in moist but well-drained soils. Needs full sun to thrive.

Our pears are grown on a vigorous root stock to make traditional large trees. A firm pear when first picked, making it useful for cooking, softens nicely in the fruit bowl after a few days if you prefer your dessert pears less crunchy.

Pear trees hold their foliage longer than many other deciduous trees, making them surprisingly useful as screening trees.

Usually available from 10cm to 14cm girth.

Double Flowered Ornamental cherries

A medium sized round headed tree with an even crown and a spreading habit. Outstanding double white flowers open slightly later than its parent the wild cherry, in late April. Autumn colours of yellow and orange make for a good late display.

Ornamental cherries grow best in full sun on moist fertile deep loamy soils, it is perfectly happy on alkaline soils which it prefers. It will therefore grow well in a most garden or parkland positions. Poor soils should have organic matter added to the backfill during planting. It does not like waterlogged or permanently wet ground. A fast growing tree typically reaching a height of 10m (30ft).

Apple James Grieve

James Grieve is a justifiably popular dual-purpose apple variety, raised in Scotland at the end of the 19th century. It is a mid-season variety that is picked in early-mid September. At this stage it is pleasantly acidic and refreshing but after a few weeks the flavour sweetens and becomes quite mild. The texture does not break up if cooked. All our apples are grown on a vigorous root stock to make large fruit trees as seen in many old orchards.

Apple Bramley

A culinary apple that is vigorous and partially tip bearing. Pale pink flowers are followed by flattish fruit, green with reddish flush that can be used from Nov to Feb. Triploid, so poor pollinator and needs two other apples for polination.
