Looking for above fence screening trees that don’t take up too much space? By trimming and framing, we have created Pleached Cotoneaster which are the perfect solution. UK grown.

6 feet-tall fences or walls are the maximum height allowed without planning permission. Planting Pleached Cotoneaster adds even higher screening. A semi evergreen tree.

Our plants have a 180cm stem/trunk, with a pleached head of 150cm wide by 120cm high. We usually recommend a planting spacing of 180cm (6ft) from stem to stem. But you can go a little closer if needed.

Basic annual maintenance helps the Cotoneaster retain its pleached shape. It also helps the ‘head’ fill in even more. Eventually the plant becomes twiggy enough to support the shape. You can then remove the frame, or wait for it to come apart on its own, over time.

Pleached Portuguese Laurel

When it comes to evergreen pleached trees, pleached Portuguese laurel is a reliable choice. We train this vigorous, dense evergreen shrub as a tree. With large glossy green leaves, it delivers privacy, shade and reduces noise pollution.

Suitable for most soils, the Pleached Portuguese Laurel is not suitable for chalky or waterlogged sites.

Our evergreen pleached Cherry Laurel trees have a single stem/trunk approximately 180cm high. The trained 150cm square frame above this provides screening all year.

Hornbeam – Rootballed

Closely related to beech trees, Hornbeam is a bit more adaptable to soil situations. If kept trimmed Hornbeam makes an excellent hedge which, although it drops more leaf than Beech, is more than made up for in in its extra twiggyness and by the fact that it is a much quicker grower and much more tolerant of a wider range of soils including heavy damp ones. Soft, mid-green leaves turn golden yellow in autumn, then brown for winter (a percentage of leaves are retained in winter giving an “everbrown” characteristic which is useful for screening and privacy), and then leafing-up over a month earlier in spring than Beech with bright, vivid green soft leaves in spring.

This is offered as an almost instant hedge 200cm tall which will fill out to its finished form within one year. For immediate density we recommend planting them at a spacing of 55-65cm (stem to stem), but if time allows you can increase this distance somewhat to reduce the overall spend per metre. Hornbeam is an excellent hedging choice where privacy is required but the conditions are too damp for evergreens to thrive.

Available as a trimmed hedging block 200cm+ tall as a wire-wrapped rootball from our fields during dormancy (winter).

Standard Cherry Laurel Rotundifolia

We create a standard Cherry Laurel tree by training and pruning this vigorous, dense evergreen shrub. The canopy grows above a single stem or trunk which is approximately 6ft tall. Glossy dark green leaves provide screening throughout the year.

Cherry Laurel is very hardy and tolerates exposed and cold conditions. It dislikes waterlogged or highly alkaline soils. Our standard Cherry Laurel trees are dug from our fields in wire-wrapped root balls.

Portuguese Laurel Tree

Portuguese laurel tree (Prunus lusitanica) when trained as a tree makes an excellent small lollipop tree which is ideal either as a formal evergreen shape that needs very little pruning or can be used as an evergreen screen above a fence or hedge. The tree has red-stalked glossy dark green leaves, and the plant has white flowers in June, followed by red, maturing to dark purple, berries (harmful if eaten). Hardier than P. laurocerasus and content even on shallow chalk soils.

Portuguese laurel

Portuguese Laurel is a dense, bushy evergreen shrub. Our UK grown plants have red-stalked dark green leaves ranging from ovate to elliptic in shape. Capable of growing up to 20m in height, Portuguese Laurel is an excellent choice for hedging and screening. In June it displays white flowers, followed by red, maturing to dark purple berries. These are harmful if eaten.

Hardier than Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel can thrive even in shallow chalk soils.

Ornamental Pear – pleached

When it comes to pleached trees, an Ornamental Pear delivers wonderful interest with dark glossy-green leaves. Umbels of white flowers appear in March to early April. With enough direct sunlight, the foliage turns coppery-red in autumn.

Although deciduous, Ornamental Pear leaves can remain on the tree well into winter. This makes it a great tree for screening. Its compact root system makes it ideal for urban planting even when close to buildings. An Ornamental Pear tree is also air pollution-tolerant and fire blight-resistant.

Pleached trees are an excellent way to create privacy above a 180cm wall or fence. To maintain the shape and density, prune and train the tree annually.

Pear trees prefer a well-drained soil, anything from slightly acid to slightly limy, but not too dry. Add plenty of organic material if planting in sandy soils. We recommend a planting distance of 180cm between stems/trunks. Check out Caring for ornamental pear trees for more tips.

Ornamental Pear

Small-medium deciduous tree with narrow conical crown and dark glossy-green leaves which may remain on the tree well into winter. Early into leaf. Autumn colour: turning orange-yellow, scarlet to purple in late autumn. Bears umbels of white flowers in March to early April. Tolerant of air pollution, resistant to fire blight. The long leaf retention make this a great tree for screening, and its compact root system make it ideal for urban planting even when close to buildings.

A good uniform conical tree with white flowers in the early spring followed by glossy heart shaped leaves early in the year. The autumn colour is spectacular with reds and oranges which hang on into mid December. This tree is 3/4 evergreen and is good for small avenues and screening. Will tolerate most soils as long as they are not waterlogged.

Available as a standard tree 12cm to 20cm girth.
