This is offered as an almost instant hedge 200cm tall which will fill out to its finished form within one year. For immediate density we recommend planting them at a spacing of 55-65cm (stem to stem), but if time allows you can increase this distance somewhat to reduce the overall spend per metre. Hornbeam is an excellent hedging choice where privacy is required but the conditions are too damp for evergreens to thrive.

Available as a trimmed hedging block 200cm+ tall as a wire-wrapped rootball from our fields during dormancy (winter).

Cherry Laurel is very hardy and tolerates exposed and cold conditions. It dislikes waterlogged or highly alkaline soils. Our standard Cherry Laurel trees are dug from our fields in wire-wrapped root balls.

Hardier than Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel can thrive even in shallow chalk soils.

If you need a tall screening tree, we can supply Portuguese Laurels with a clear stem/trunk below a head of branches.

Although deciduous, Ornamental Pear leaves can remain on the tree well into winter. This makes it a great tree for screening. Its compact root system makes it ideal for urban planting even when close to buildings. An Ornamental Pear tree is also air pollution-tolerant and fire blight-resistant.

Pleached trees are an excellent way to create privacy above a 180cm wall or fence. To maintain the shape and density, prune and train the tree annually.

Pear trees prefer a well-drained soil, anything from slightly acid to slightly limy, but not too dry. Add plenty of organic material if planting in sandy soils. We recommend a planting distance of 180cm between stems/trunks. Check out Caring for ornamental pear trees  for more tips.

Our pleached pear trees have a 180cm stem/trunk, with a pleached head 150cm wide and 120cm high.

A good uniform conical tree with white flowers in the early spring followed by glossy heart shaped leaves early in the year. The autumn colour is spectacular with reds and oranges which hang on into mid December. This tree is 3/4 evergreen and is good for small avenues and screening. Will tolerate most soils as long as they are not waterlogged.

Available as a standard tree 12cm to 20cm girth.

An excellent tree for exposed windy sites with white flowers in early summer and superb autumn colour. This is an excellent tree for security planting, ideal to discourage someone from climbing over a boundary wall or fence, as it bears 3-4cm long, nail-like thorns. These thorns are hard and strong and produced on the twigs and branches densely enough to be a major deterrent to anyone trying to push their way through, but not so dense as to be a major hindrance to pruning. If required, regular pruning will easily limit the growth of this already compact garden tree (maximum height unpruned will not exceed 5-7 metres), as well as increase the density of the canopy for improved screening and security.

It has a dense canopy and is very tolerant of pruning so can be an excellent tree for screening. The subtle spring blossom looks frothy from a distance. Autumn colour is a striking golden-yellow.

A tree with an attractive columnar habit, useful for formal work in small spaces and for avenues. Like normal Hornbeam it is good for damp soils and in exposed sites. Unlike normal Hornbeam, Frans Fontaine does not retain any brown leaves in winter.

Unlike normal Hornbeam, the Flame Hornbeam sheds its leaves in autumn. The resulting pattern of skeleton branches creates a stunning silhouette.

Its compact and dense branches is ideal for screening. The symmetry of the Flame Hornbeam works well in formal settings or as an avenue tree where spread space is limited.

The arching branches of Cotoneaster are covered in dark green foliage turning yellow-red in autumn. White flowers in summer are followed by bright red berry-like fruit.

Cotoneasters are fast-growing, with a mature height of 6 to 8 metres / 20 to 26 feet. Prefers a sheltered position.

We grow these plants as a standard tree with a 160 – 180cm stem clear of protruding branches. 8cm to 12cm girths are available.
