Closely related to beech trees, Hornbeam is a bit more adaptable to soil situations. If kept trimmed Hornbeam makes an excellent hedge which, although it drops more leaf than Beech, is more than made up for in in its extra twiggyness and by the fact that it is a much quicker grower and much more tolerant of a wider range of soils including heavy damp ones. Soft, mid-green leaves turn golden yellow in autumn, then brown for winter (a percentage of leaves are retained in winter giving an “everbrown” characteristic which is useful for screening and privacy), and then leafing-up over a month earlier in spring than Beech with bright, vivid green soft leaves in spring.

This is offered as an almost instant hedge 200cm tall which will fill out to its finished form within one year. For immediate density we recommend planting them at a spacing of 55-65cm (stem to stem), but if time allows you can increase this distance somewhat to reduce the overall spend per metre. Hornbeam is an excellent hedging choice where privacy is required but the conditions are too damp for evergreens to thrive.

Available as a trimmed hedging block 200cm+ tall as a wire-wrapped rootball from our fields during dormancy (winter).

Capable of growing up to 20m in height, Portuguese Laurel is an excellent choice for hedging and screening. In June it displays white flowers, followed by red, maturing to dark purple berries. These are harmful if eaten.

Hardier than Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel can thrive even in shallow chalk soils.

If you need a tall screening tree, we can supply Portuguese Laurels with a clear stem/trunk below a head of branches.

When it comes to pleached trees, an Ornamental Pear delivers wonderful interest with dark glossy-green leaves. Umbels of white flowers appear in March to early April. With enough direct sunlight, the foliage turns coppery-red in autumn.

Although deciduous, Ornamental Pear leaves can remain on the tree well into winter. This makes it a great tree for screening. Its compact root system makes it ideal for urban planting even when close to buildings. An Ornamental Pear tree is also air pollution-tolerant and fire blight-resistant.

Pleached trees are an excellent way to create privacy above a 180cm wall or fence. To maintain the shape and density, prune and train the tree annually.

Pear trees prefer a well-drained soil, anything from slightly acid to slightly limy, but not too dry. Add plenty of organic material if planting in sandy soils. We recommend a planting distance of 180cm between stems/trunks. Check out Caring for ornamental pear trees for more tips.

Our pleached pear trees have a 180cm stem/trunk, with a pleached head 150cm wide and 120cm high.

Small-medium deciduous tree with narrow conical crown and dark glossy-green leaves which may remain on the tree well into winter. Early into leaf. Autumn colour: turning orange-yellow, scarlet to purple in late autumn. Bears umbels of white flowers in March to early April. Tolerant of air pollution, resistant to fire blight. The long leaf retention make this a great tree for screening, and its compact root system make it ideal for urban planting even when close to buildings.

A good uniform conical tree with white flowers in the early spring followed by glossy heart shaped leaves early in the year. The autumn colour is spectacular with reds and oranges which hang on into mid December. This tree is 3/4 evergreen and is good for small avenues and screening. Will tolerate most soils as long as they are not waterlogged.

Available as a standard tree 12cm to 20cm girth.

Small “Hawthorn” tree with round, glossy dark green leaves, with fiery yellow-orange to red autumn colour. White flowers in late May or early June, followed by large red fruits in autumn. Attractive street or garden tree, excellent for hedging/screening, and is of ecological value to birds (for both food and shelter). Tolerant of wind and drought (once established).

An excellent tree for exposed windy sites with white flowers in early summer and superb autumn colour. This is an excellent tree for security planting, ideal to discourage someone from climbing over a boundary wall or fence, as it bears 3-4cm long, nail-like thorns. These thorns are hard and strong and produced on the twigs and branches densely enough to be a major deterrent to anyone trying to push their way through, but not so dense as to be a major hindrance to pruning. If required, regular pruning will easily limit the growth of this already compact garden tree (maximum height unpruned will not exceed 5-7 metres), as well as increase the density of the canopy for improved screening and security.

Available as standard trees 10cm to 14cm girth.

A very narrow columnar selection of our native Hornbeam that maintains its shape throughout its life. This cultivar is also of value as an avenue tree where spread space is limited. Its upright habit makes it ideal as an accent point in a planting scheme, or for use as screening where height is required but space is limited. It has golden yellow autumn foliage colour and, like its parent, is tolerant of damp sites. Ultimate height around 10 metres.

A tree with an attractive columnar habit, useful for formal work in small spaces and for avenues. Like normal Hornbeam it is good for damp soils and in exposed sites. Unlike normal Hornbeam, Frans Fontaine does not retain any brown leaves in winter.

Usually in stock as container trees from about 12cm to 18cm girth, as either “feathered” (branches all the way up) or “standard” (clear stem of about 180cm) trees.

Unlike normal Hornbeam, the Flame Hornbeam sheds its leaves in autumn. The resulting pattern of skeleton branches creates a stunning silhouette.
