In spring, copper foliage emerges alongside or shortly after the blossom, with the leaves turning mid-green as they mature. When planted in a sunny position, Amelanchier produces fiery scarlet autumn foliage.

It can be planted in most soils including clay, but not in waterlogged or chalky soils. If pruned after flowering, Amelanchier makes an attractive and unusual hedging option.

Bright red stems visible in the winter and thrives on damp soils. This variety is the brightest of the red-stemmed Dogwoods, with stems which positively shine in the winter sun.

If you can plant this next to a yellow-leafed evergreen, such as Choisya ternata Sundance for example, the colour combination gives an effect which is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Stunning!

For maximum effect on a larger scale, particularly if the area is to be seen from a distance or when driving past, plant in large drifts on a sunny site.

As with most Birch, a single specimen looks fantastic but a cluster of several looks even better! Birch is suitable for a wide range of soils, including fairly damp sites, but not waterlogged. Himalayan Birch trees prefer neutral to acid conditions. They will tolerate sandy soils or even moderately chalky sites if enough organic matter has been added. They can also withstand exposed locations.

Mature height: around 10 metres in the north of England. But they can reach 15 metres further south or in sheltered areas.

Usually in stock as container trees from about 12cm to 18cm girth or more. Available as single stem or multi stemmed.

The arching branches of Cotoneaster are covered in dark green foliage turning yellow-red in autumn. White flowers in summer are followed by bright red berry-like fruit.

Cotoneasters are fast-growing, with a mature height of 6 to 8 metres / 20 to 26 feet. Prefers a sheltered position.

We grow these plants as a standard tree with a 160 – 180cm stem clear of protruding branches. 8cm to 12cm girths are available.

6 feet-tall fences or walls are the maximum height allowed without planning permission. Planting Pleached Hornbeam adds even higher screening. Technically a deciduous tree, Hornbeam is exempt from the ‘high hedge’ restrictions which apply to evergreens. However it is often ‘everbrown’, retaining many brown leaves during winter.

Our plants have a 180cm stem/trunk, with a pleached head of 150cm wide by 120cm high. We usually recommend a planting spacing of 180cm (6ft) from stem to stem. But you can go a little closer if needed.

Basic annual maintenance helps the Hornbeam retain its pleached shape. It also helps the ‘head’ fill in even more. Eventually the plant becomes twiggy enough to support the shape. You can then remove the frame, or wait for it to come apart on its own, over time.

When trimmed, Osmanthus Burkwoodii makes a great medium-sized evergreen hedge. It thrives in most well-drained soils, in both exposed or sheltered locations.

A good evergreen that makes a good hedge in coastal areas. Bears small brownish, almost insignificant, strongly scented flowers in late summer or early autumn.

Laurel thrives in most situations, including semi shade. However it does not tolerate waterlogged ground or salt spray. This includes coastal positioning and salt splash off a road caused by gritting.
