Mahonia
Mahonia media Winter SunLarge evergreen shrub with pinnate dark-green leaves, divided sharply toothed leaflets. Lightly fragrant bright-yellow flowers on densely-clustered, arching racemes throughout late autumn and winter. Ideal for growing under large trees as tolerant of shade and root competition.
A nice shrub with very architectural leaves and semi-upright sunshine-yellow flowers in winter. This plant will grow in shade. This has a more upright habit than Mahonia bealei, growing almost to appear like a spiky, multi-stemmed palm tree in maturity, making it an ideal architectural plant for the back of a border. If it gets too tall or too woody it can be hard pruned with a bow-saw! The flowers have a very subtle fragrance; for a stronger, sweeter perfume try growing Mahonia bealei.
Available as bushes 50cm to 100cm tall.
