Fastigiate Hornbeam
Carpinus betulus Fastigiata
A beautiful upright selection of our native Hornbeam, often used for screening purposes because of its compact and dense branching habit. This cultivar is also of value as an avenue tree where spread space is limited. It makes a superb symmetrical and formal tree, growing as a stiffly upright column to start with, but gradually developing a beautiful teardrop-shaped canopy. It has vivid golden-yellow autumn colour and, like its parent, is tolerant of damp sites. Ultimate height around 10 metres.
A tree with an excellent regular crown which is good for formal work and avenues. Like normal hornbeam it is good for damp soils and in exposed sites. Unlike normal Hornbeam this form does not retain any of the brown leaves during winter, but the natural yet formal shape and pattern of the branching "skeleton" creates a stunning silhouette.
Usually in stock as container trees from about 12cm to 18cm girth or more, as both "feathered" (with branches all the way to the base) and "standard" (with a clear stem of approximately 180cm) trees.
