August is usually a good month for pruning garden hedges, especially evergreens. But only as long as the weather is not excessively hot and the hedge isn’t suffering from drought stress. Young birds should all now be fledged and nesting couples should have moved on.
Restorative/hard pruning is usually most effective earlier in the year, if it can be done without disturbing nesting birds. However pruning evergreen hedges in late summer is often the best time for giving them an annual tidy up. They should be able to recover well before the frosts come but not so long as to allow them to get untidy before winter.
We recommend that evergreen hedges should not be pruned after the second week of September.
